Hurricane Dorian Preparation Checklist-
As another hurricane is headed towards Florida, preparation should be on everyone’s mind. We at Miami Mold Specialists wanted to take the time to pull together a quick list of things you can do to prepare you, your loved ones, your belongings, your personal property, and your home from any additional hurricane damage.
Normal Hurricane Preparation Supplies
- Common items- food, canned goods, first aid kit, batteries, candles, gas, cooking fuel, flashlights,
- Water for drinking(fill up water bottles), cooking, washing, flushing toilets(fill the bathtub).
- Ice and coolers.
- Medications
- Contact Numbers, important documents, credit cards, and pull out cash.
- Sandbags
- Thick construction plastic sheeting great for sealing up buildings from flood water.
- Tarps- just in case you spring a leak, a tree branch causes roof leak, debris flies through a window, …
- Plywood- for boarding up before, during, and potentially after the storm.
- Wet dry shop vac- in case water gets in or your roof starts leaking…
- Generator- If possible, purchase a generator. If you already own one, drain old gas if need be, add new gas, check/change oil, clean filters, test run the generator.
Other things you can do-
- Board up windows or use hurricane shutters.
- Use thick plastic, sandbags to build barriers against water.
- Raising furniture, items, electronics off the floor and away from windows.
- Keeping HVAC on as long as possible.
- Make fridge as cold as you can shortly before storm.
- Fill up bottles of water and freeze them.
- Secure items outside that could become airborne.
- Trimming tree limbs back from homes and buildings.
- Park vehicles in garage or other safe place.
- Touch base with neighbors that plan on riding out the storm. Just in case something happens, you can rely on each other for shelter and assistance.
If you live in an apartment complex, condo, high rise, have an HOA, or are renting some other type of housing; it is highly advisable to keep all of their contact numbers handy in case of a building emergency.
After the storm-
Hurricane Damage and Water Damage Inspection
Visually inspect your home, apartment , or building for leaks, water damage, or exterior damage that could lead to future water damage and mold growth.
If you do come across a leak, water damage, exterior and interior damage, or have endured flooding and flood damage; the first thing you should do is take pictures. The second thing you may want to do is call your insurance company for more information about your policy and options available to get your home or building back to 100%.
Remember, it only takes mold 24-48 hours to take a foot hold and start flourishing. Living in South Florida after a tropical storm or hurricane that has knocked out the power for a few days with no AC, is all it takes for a potential mold infestation to turn into a full blown mold outbreak.
