Depending on the size and scope of the affected areas, it may be advisable to contact a state licensed mold remediation company to handle the entire mold removal process.
As a general rule of thumb, any time mold is discovered, and the square footage of the entire mold growth is at or around 10 sq. ft.; then it is highly recommended that you call a professional mold remediation company to handle the job.
If the affected area has only a small amount of mold, then it may be possible to attempt the DIY mold removal option. However, there are some important criteria and guidelines to keep in mind if this is the route you plan on taking. Moreover, sometimes you may see the mold, but it could also be growing where you may not be able to see, i.e- inside walls, under carpet or wood flooring, behind paint, under sheetrock, etc.
DIY Mold Removal Basics-
- Seal off and quarantine the area before getting started. This will help with mitigating cross contamination.
- Make sure to have everything u need to conduct the mold remediation in the quarantined area before starting.
- Tape off HVA vents and/or turn off the HVAC system.
- If available, open a window and use a high power fan or rent a professional air mover and/or scrubbers.
- Protective gear
- Remove any completely contaminated materials if possible and dispose of in heavy duty , sealed trash bags.
- After all mold contaminated materials have been removed, then you can start treating any other affected areas.
- While conducting the work, keep an eye out for any potential sources that could be causing the mold to grow. You will have to fix any leaks, places with poor ventilation, and areas where there is excess moisture and or humidity.
- It may also be a good idea to use a mold inhibiting paint as to prevent future mold growth.
- After all mold is removed, you will be able to start repairing any previous mold damaged areas.
